Dear HA Member,
Welcome to 2011 and the
first edition of Pathways for the New Year.
Owing to circumstances, this edition will be
brief. Next month we will be back to our
regular format with all the regular features
you've come to expect.
January's Pathways focuses on
research. Read below as we announce our
latest round of MYI recipients and the winner of
the 2010 Resident's Prize. We also announce
the availability of applications for our 2011
Education Scholarships and include messages from
our Chairman of the Board and CEO to
you.
As always, we are excited to tackle the
New Year. Planning for our next conference
is underway, our website is getting better and
better at providing more information to more
people, research is moving forward and the
upcoming WALK season looks to be bigger and better
than ever.
Thank you for being a member of our
inspiring community.
With warm
regards,
The team at the Hydrocephalus

2010
was a great year and we accomplished a
LOT. We had a great conference, launched a new website as well as
our Hydrocephalus Resource
Library, ran a very successful set of WALKs and other events and
funded two new young investigators in
addition to re-funding last year's five
investigators to name just a few of those
accomplishments.
With
Rick back at the helm, I feel confident that 2011
will be even more gratifying and productive.
We are on the verge of releasing a three year plan
for our strategic research priorities, we will run
an HA sponsored research conference, we will begin
asking for major gifts from our constituents, our
WALK program will expand and our support and
outreach efforts will touch more people than any
prior year. Our support group efforts and
Teens Take Charge will help us reach new heights
in outreach and advocacy. And given that we
received a large grant for research in December,
we know that we will run yet another exciting
research grant program this year.
Put
simply, we have a lot of momentum going into
2011.

Hydrocephalus Association
Announces Latest Round of Research
Funding
In early 2009, the
Hydrocephalus Association launched its Research
Initiative. In an effort to increase the
pool of scientists devoted to hydrocephalus
research we provided direct funding to five young
researchers, called Mentored Young Investigators
(MYI's). In December of 2010 we
funded two additional Mentored Young
Investigators.
We are proud to
introduce:
Jay Riva-Cambrin, MD, a
pediatric neurosurgeon of the University of Utah
and Primary Children's Medical
Center.
Sonia Podvin, PhD of UCSD,
who has been awarded the Kate Finlayson Memorial
Research Grant.
For more details on their
projects, please click here to read the complete
article.

Dr. Eskandari
|
Announcing 2010 Resident's Prize
Awardee: Ramin Eskandari,
MD
Since 1989, the Hydrocephalus Association has
awarded a Resident's Prize to the most
promising hydrocephalus-related research
paper presented by a neurosurgical resident at the
Annual Pediatric Section meeting of the
AANS/CNS.
This was an early effort by the
HA to positively effect the largely barren
landscape of hydrocephalus research. The
winner is selected every year by a panel of
neurological experts.
The Resident's Prize awardee for 2010 is Dr.
Ramin Eskandari of the University of Utah and his
paper: 'Effects of Early and Late Reservoir
Treatment in Experimental Neonatal
Hydrocephalus'.

From the
Acting CEO |
2011 -
a new year and another full agenda for the
Hydrocephalus Association! After a brief
hiatus from the Association (May - November), I
have rejoined the HA team and am looking forward
to working with the board and staff as we push
forward to:
|
Rick
Smith,
Acting
CEO |
Each
year, as more and more people join the
Association, we become a stronger organization
with increased capacity to make a real difference
in the lives of individuals and families facing
the challenges of hydrocephalus.
I
look forward to working with the very dedicated
hydrocephalus community as we seek real
advances in treatment and move towards an
eventual cure for hydrocephalus. Thanks
again for your support of our work.
Rick
